The cost of living well in Manchester.

Our verdict. Manchester gives a family the UK's schools at about a third of London's cost. It suits a household that wants a large detached house in Hale or Alderley Edge rather than a flat in town, and a day school such as The Manchester Grammar School, which charges £19,809 a year including VAT (boys only). The drawback is that the tax is London's: a 45% top rate and, since April 2025, no non-dom status, only four years' relief on foreign income for newcomers. There is no sea berth, and Prestbury Golf Club has a waiting list. Compared with London, a home in Hale Barns sells for about a fifth of Mayfair's price per square metre.
