The routes to living in Hong Kong.

Our verdict. Hong Kong's New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme suits an investor with HK$30 million to hold in listed securities, funds and, within limits, property. Real estate can make up HK$15 million of the portfolio, but residential property counts only up to HK$10 million, and only through a single home of HK$30 million or more. Hong Kong taxes no foreign-source income, dividends or capital gains. The weak point is the wait: the permit starts at two years, and permanent residence needs seven years of continuous ordinary residence. Compared with Singapore's Global Investor Programme, the minimum is about half, and the portfolio can include a home.
